🌿 A Hidden Gem by the Potomac! 🌿
Swains Lock (Lock 21) is such a peaceful and historically rich escape just outside the busy city. The blend of nature, history, and serenity makes this spot truly special. You can feel the story of the old C&O Canal come alive as you walk the trails, see the lockhouse, and listen to the gentle flow of the river nearby.
It’s a perfect spot for a quiet morning walk, an afternoon bike ride, or even a family picnic by the water. The trail is flat, shaded, and easy to navigate — ideal for all ages. I also love how well-preserved the lockhouse is; it gives you a glimpse into the life of canal keepers from the 1800s.
If you enjoy photography, history, or simply need a peaceful escape surrounded by nature, this place is a must-visit. You’ll leave refreshed and reminded of how much beauty sits quietly along the Potomac. 🌸✨

A beautiful and pleasant river walk with some people camping and go fishing. There are multiple entrances, and a lot of cyclists.
There is only one food truck(hot dogs, ice creams etc.) near the visitor center but on the expensive side. They do accept card payments.
Dogs are allowed on leash, but not permitted on some trails. Please be mindful of the trash, and try to not leave anything but your 👣.

I have been here a couple times now I can say for sure it was a beautiful experience. It's also a great trail for very long bike rides.
