We had a very enjoyable time here. We are traveling to the VA250 locations and found Robert E Lee's birthplace. I have lived in Virginia for a while now and didn't realize it was so close!

The entrance has a museum of different items of the people that lives there. Including a wedding ring that was lost at the beach and later found! There is a very informative little booklet with each of items in the cases to point out neat facts and information. There is even an old Casio watch in a case and I found that kind of hilarious with all of the ve y old artifacts they have a watch from the 80s. 😂

The grounds are very well maintained, even in winter. As you walk around you will see fallen black walnuts and other thingsnyou don't normally get to see.

Peer into the burial chamber, that was interesting too. Looks like a hole that people are just dropped into, but we found out there is stairs to below.

The big house is just that, big! The rooms are laid out how they were thought to be originally. They have a walking tour that you can use your phone for. Adds some depth to just a normal tour.

Highly recommend! Very neat and very informative place!

Great place to visit to learn more about the history of the US. You do a self guided tour using your phone and there are docents to answer questions. Very nice gift shop. Rustic cabins are available to stay in on the property. There is also an area where one can hunt for fossils by the water. Westmoreland state park is next door.

Very pretty grounds immediately around the visitor center, house and gardens. However the many trails that are advertised on their website (and trail map they give you at the welcome center) are NOT maintained and are non-traversable. We came there to hike a loop trail from the house to the beach and back!! Yeah, that's was not going to happen. Very disappointing.

Even the "beach" (and I purposely put that in quotes) was not maintained and very tiny. Not that we were looking for a real beach, but there was barely enough room to look for little beach treasures (stones, shells). And we were not there at high tide!

Is it worth $11? I guess as a donation, but for 4 people who wanted to take a hike, No!

Worth the drive! The Stratford Hall house and grounds are expansive and beautiful. The house is in very good condition and has been carefully restored. So many birds and flowers and peaceful trails and roads for walking. There are several cabins for overnight lodging. It seemed like we were stepping back in time. Bring a picnic lunch and some cold drinks, perfect for a day trip. The historic museum and gift shop are also really great. It has a self-guided audio tour, bring ear buds or headphones for your phone.

A day of history is always a learning experience and lots of fun. I miss the guided tours but the electronic media provides a lot of detailed information. Signage improvements would make it easier to find the mansion after exiting the visitor center, for entering and exiting the mansion, as well as figuring out which room to go to next. Maps would definitely help if you're planning to go to the waterfront.
