Crossing the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge was more than just a drive — for me, it was a milestone. This was my first time driving to New Jersey, and honestly, I have driving anxiety, so it wasn’t easy. My heart was racing before I even got to the bridge, but I told myself, “You’ve got this.” And somehow, I did.

I’d give this bridge a solid three stars — not because it’s bad, but because it’s a mix of challenge, beauty, and sheer determination. The bridge itself is long and steady, connecting Newburgh and Beacon over the Hudson River. The view is breathtaking if you can take a second to look — wide, open water below and a peaceful stretch of sky above. But when you’re an anxious driver, it’s hard to focus on anything except staying centered and breathing through the nerves.

Traffic was manageable, but every second felt stretched out. I gripped the wheel a little too tight, checked my mirrors a few too many times, and said a prayer or two along the way. It might not seem like a big deal to other people, but for me, this was a victory — my first time driving such a distance and my first big bridge crossing on my own.

There were moments where I wanted to pull over, turn around, or just cry, but I didn’t. I kept going. The bridge isn’t perfect — it could use better lighting and maybe smoother pavement — but it’s sturdy. It gets you where you need to go. And that’s exactly what I needed that day: a reminder that I could get to the other side, even if my heart was pounding the whole way.

When I finally made it across and saw the sign welcoming me toward New Jersey, I felt a wave of relief and pride wash over me. It wasn’t just about getting over a bridge — it was about overcoming fear. For anyone else who has driving anxiety, you’ll understand how big that is.

So yes, it was a stretch, but I made it. The Newburgh–Beacon Bridge might not be a five-star experience for everyone, but for me, it represents strength, growth, and courage. Three stars for the bridge — five stars for the lesson it gave me.

This place is a fantastic pitspot 🚏 on your next trip to Upstate NY! 🗽 The Newburgh-Beacon Bridge 🌉 has a nice pathway to walk 🚶‍♂️ or cycle 🚲 through while providing incredible views 🪟 of the river! 🌊 Note that this pathway is close to the traffic 🚦 and cars 🚗 going across the bridge so it might get noisy. 🔊 I wish I came here more often!

Got across safely but picked up a nail coming across. Made it home because I had my portable compressor. Got it fixed the next day. Stuff happens.

I can't get out of Southern New England without passing through New York and that usually involves crossing over the Hudson River. It's usually one of the New York City bridges or the Tappan Zee (Yes, I know it's the Mario Cuomo. I don't care for that.) but I'm a little bit further north and so it's the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge which is officially named for US Representatives Hamilton Fish III and IV. There's something to be said for name recognition.

The bridge carries Interstate 84 over the Hudson, originally a single lane in each direction that was built in 1963, the second bridge was built in 1980. It is a continuous truss bridge.

There is a toll to cross the bridge with payment taken only by transponder or bill-by-mail. Transponders, such as my North Carolina QuickPass, are $1.65.

I had no issue crossing the bridge even on a breezy day.

Useful bridge, well maintained (it seems) I see there’s a pedestrian lane on the side but we were driving.

3 lanes, max speed 45 mph but most people don’t really care unfortunately.
