Aerial Photography Review: Federal Lock – Troy, NY

On a crisp afternoon in Troy, NY, Drone Shot Media set out to capture the impressive Federal Lock along the Hudson River—a key gateway between the tidal waters of the Hudson and the Erie Canal system. This historic structure, first opened in 1916, remains a vital part of New York’s waterways, and from the air, its scale and engineering are nothing short of spectacular.

Flying above the lock revealed incredible symmetry—the massive gates, churning currents, and passing vessels created striking geometric patterns perfect for high-resolution drone photography. The surrounding scenery added to the magic: the autumn foliage along the riverbanks popped with vibrant oranges and reds, offering dramatic contrasts against the deep blues of the water.

One of the unique challenges was timing. With boat traffic moving through the lock, patience was key to capturing dynamic shots of vessels entering and exiting. Careful coordination and flight planning ensured every angle showcased both the lock’s mechanics and the natural beauty of the Hudson River.

Our visit to the Federal Lock was a reminder of how industrial function and natural beauty can coexist. The standout moment was catching a tugboat gliding through the lock at sunset, the golden light reflecting off the still waters—an image that perfectly captured the spirit of the Hudson Valley.

If you’re exploring the Capital Region, the Federal Lock is not just an engineering marvel—it’s a photographer’s dream. From history to breathtaking aerial views, it’s a location that continues to inspire Drone Shot Media’s mission to share New York’s hidden gems from above.

We were heading up to enter the Erie canal when we encountered the Troy impediment to navigation, otherwise known as the Troy Lock, and found it closed at 5:00 p.m.

Locks on the New York canal system above are open till 7:00 p.m. and later in some cases. But some genius decided to cut off access 2 hours early here at the very beginning.

The lock is additionally geared for commercial traffic, very dirty and in no way adds to the experience of traveling up the Hudson, which up till now would be something I would highly recommend.

If you are making the transition from the Great lakes to the Hudson or vice versa, be warned of this major roadblock to your progress.

Locked space from land. No access whatsoever.

The whole area is fenced off and you are not able to get close to see the lock itself. Very disappointed ☹️
