An absolutely gorgeous and rare span built in 1889, and received a major refit in 1936 with the replacement of her original timber deck and stiffening trusses with steel components. She is the only remaining underspanned bridge in the United States. Underspanned meaning that the nadir of her wire cable support lengths is under the level of the bridge deck. Howe Truss panels are used to stiffen her overall deck structure. There is quite a bit of history here, with this bridge replacing a ferry service that offered passage across the Delaware. I encourage you to research her background on various websites. Of note, in 1903, a steam locomotive was making its way through the area, stopped as it reached Kellams Bridge, and promptly detonated. All crewmen were injured, with one succumbing to his wounds.
