I used to come to John Heinz often years ago and always loved it, but this visit was disappointing. We hiked the Long Hook Creek Loop Trail and the Wetland Loop Trail from the main map. The narrow trails aren’t as well maintained as they used to be, but I wouldn’t have minded that if the ticks weren’t so bad — I picked no less than five off my son’s pants during our hike!
There are now signs posted warning not to eat fish caught here due to chemical contamination, which was also concerning. They’ve added trash cans and a bathroom since I was last here, which is a nice improvement. Unfortunately, the tick problem, lack of trail maintenance, and now the contamination warnings make it hard to enjoy.

A Fantastic Urban Refuge for Nature Lovers
This is a fantastic spot for a day out, offering a surprising escape right in the city. The refuge is a true gem, perfect for hiking, birding, and enjoying nature. With plenty of parking, clean restrooms, and a large picnic pavilion, it's well-equipped for visitors.
The trails are great for walking, and it's a very dog-friendly park. While the water levels may vary with the climate, the variety of wildlife is a highlight. I saw many birds and butterflies, including monarch butterflies, making it a great place for photography. The staff is friendly and helpful.
The visitor center is a cool, educational spot that's worth checking out, especially if you have kids. It's an amazing and fun place for the whole family. It reminded one visitor of the Everglades in Florida.
A few visitors noted the excellent birding opportunities, with a variety of habitats attracting many types of birds, including rare ones. However, there is a concern that the northernmost pool is filling with vegetation, which could impact the shorebirds.
Overall, whether you're a serious birder, a family looking for a fun day, or just want to enjoy a peaceful hike, this urban wildlife refuge is highly recommended. It’s a great year-round destination, especially during migration season.

We went for the nature festival they held. There were live animals to see, archery, crafts for the little ones and different trails to walk. It was very pretty there. The weather was nice, and we walked the trails.

There is plenty of parking. Great trails! You didn’t see much water filled due to the climate but beautiful animals such as birds and butterflies were shown. Many monarch butterflies etc! Lots of benches to sit! Friendly staff as well!
