The Calvin Coolidge Memorial Bridge spans the Connecticut River and carries Route 9 between Northampton and Hadley. It replaces a bridge that was destroyed by flooding in 1936.
Funding was secured through the Hayden Cartwright Act, a federal program aimed at creating jobs through public works. The bridge was completed and dedicated in 1939, named in honor of President Calvin Coolidge—a longtime Northampton resident, former mayor, and Amherst College alumnus.
Architecturally, the bridge is a five-span Warren deck truss design, notable for its granite-faced abutment pylons adorned with carved eagles and incised lettering. The pylons measure 15 by 27 feet and feature bronze doors that open into small interior rooms. We did not stop to try to see the interior.
The bridge rail is a 3½-foot-high welded steel structure in weathered green, originally fitted with low-pressure sodium lamps developed by General Electric. These were later replaced with cobra head luminaires for better color rendering.

Fantastic bridge! Perfect for both pedestrians and motorists. The masonry and metalwork of this bridge are beautiful, and it fits in perfectly with its surroundings. It also has a commanding view of the Connecticut River, which is beautiful, especially in fall. I could see rowing teams practicing on the river as we crossed the bridge! Overall, it's a perfect spot to take in the scenery of Western Mass and just chill.

I always love going for a walk here. The bridge is a beautiful place for a birdwatcher and a great place to take the kidlet for a trike ride.
My only complaint is that despite the fact that the outhouse facilities are well cared for there is often used needles in them. I would always check before sending a kid in one.

They were smart to put a bridge there or else each town would just have a weird dead-end road. One star lost because it could be taller. One star lost because a tunnel would have been cool, too.

Very heavily travelled bridge connecting Hadley to Northampton over the Connecticut River! Has a pot hole problem every late winter time!
