Indigo Tunnel

Historic Site

The Western Maryland Railroad built a 4,350-foot long tunnel through the Paw Paw bends to save a mile or more of track along the meandering Potomac River. The tunnel was abandoned in 1975 and was considered for an extension of the Western Maryland Rail Trail. However, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources identified a large colony of bats inside the tunnel, and in a preservation effort, has closed the tunnel and installed metal gates at each end of the tunnel.
