Before Washington was a city, much of the upper estuary riverbank was a wetland. Dyke Marsh is a 380-acre relic of the way the Potomac was 200 years ago, with native aquatic plants and animals. It is a popular spot for waterfowl and migrating birds as well. More than 250 species of birds have been sighted in the wetland. The marsh is a part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, from the Belle Haven picnic area southward to Wellington Villa. The marsh is visible from the parkway at the Hunting Creek Bridge. The Mount Vernon multi use trail leaves the roadside and goes directly through the marsh, with a dramatic series of wooden bridges over the wetlands.
